San Diego has had Dutch people living here for many years.  At one time there was even a Dutch Consulate in Downtown.  The Dutch Society of San Diego served the needs of the Dutch community for a long time.  Over time, though, the Dutch have adapted and become part of San Diego's greater diverse community and got out of the habit of regularly getting together and having a larger presence in San Diego.  

With the desire to learn the Dutch language to communicate with relatives (I have a Dutch mother from NL) and to be more of a part of the NL when I travel there, I formed the Dutch Language Meet Up in Jan of 2003.   Starting with just 2 members, it has grown to about 200 members since then (some have left the group for various reasons) and is still growing and fluxuating. 

We started a Dutch class in August of 2004 with a dozen students (adults) and it is still going with about 6.   Curretly there are two official classes for learning Dutch. One at UCSD Extension and the other at Language Door both in San Diego. There is also school for children aged 4 - 14 held a few hours weekly for learning Dutch language and culture.   See Links page for information and contact to these opportunities.

From a goal to find students to learn Dutch with, it has grown into  a nice community.  We have Dutch immigrants and expats as well as people of Dutch heritage and spouses and those interested in Dutch culture.  There is no formal "society" at this time (with bylaws, memberships, board members etc) but if the interest arises for such, we could certainly form one.   Through Meet Up.com ("NL Groep" page for the link) we have an organized and capable way of organizing meetings, events, communication and information dissemenation. 

The purpose of this website is to act as a conduit of information and links to other helpful sites, events, Dutch businesses, etc around San Diego.  Think of this as an online bulletin board for San Diego Dutchies.
